Out-of-hours' at Addenbrooke's - making the move work for patients
The Cambridge out-of-hours’ GP service will move from Chesterton Medical Centre to the Urgent Treatment Centre at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on 8 August 2017.
Our Healthwatch is part of a project steering group, alongside patient representatives, to help make the move work for patients. Our role there is not to make decisions but to question decisions made from a patient perspective.
We are often making the very practical points about how small things like clear signage matter.
The new Urgent Treatment Centre will be based in Clinic 9 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (next to the Outpatients’ entrance) and has recently been refurbished. It will operate between 6.30pm and 8.00am on weekdays and 24 hours at weekends and on bank holidays.
It is being run by Herts Urgent Care as part of the integrated out-of-hours’ care contract. You need to call NHS 111 to access this service as they do not offer walk-in appointments.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG made a decision to move the out-of-hours’ base in Chesterton, north Cambridge, to Addenbrooke’s. This is part of a plan to improve how urgent and emergency care services work for people in Cambridge and the surrounding area.
They made this decision after running a public consultation. We responded to the consultation to raise concerns about how it might affect people in Chesterton, a more deprived local community. This was after hearing opinions from local people, including at the CCG’s public consultation meetings.
As a result, the CCG have made a commitment to putting things in place to make it as easy as possible for people to use the new base at Addenbrooke’s.
The fortnightly steering group is scheduled to continue until a regular oversight group is formed so Healthwatch will be keeping a close eye on things after the launch.
Once the service is up and running, we will want to see meaningful patient experience feedback used to evaluate and improve care.
Please tell us about your experiences of calling NHS 111 and of using the out-of-hours' service in Cambridgeshire. We want to know how well this relatively new service is working for people, particularly at the new Urgent Treatment Centre when it opens next month. You can call us on 0330 355 1285, email firstname.lastname@example.org or leave your feedback online.
You will also be able to pick up one of our Freepost 'Tell Us' forms in the new Urgent Treatment Centre when it opens, and post it back to us free of charge.
