Statement from Jess Slater, CEO at Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

"While we await the outcome of proposed changes to the Health and Social Care Act currently before Parliament, it is becoming increasingly clear that the local Healthwatch network will close as part of national reforms.

"As part of the evolving health and care landscape, we recognise that significant changes are underway in how services engage with people and communities across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Over the next year, we will be working closely with the Integrated Care Board, local authorities, and other partners to ensure that the core functions of Healthwatch are fully and effectively embedded into local structures and systems.

"Our mission has always been to make sure that people’s voices are heard and acted upon. As these reforms unfold, we remain committed to supporting a transition that protects and sustains this vital role. We stand ready to work in partnership with system leaders, ensuring that changes are well-planned, ethical, and in the best interests of our diverse communities.

"Our priority is to safeguard continuity for local people, so that their experiences, needs, and priorities continue to shape services, reduce inequalities, and improve care. We will work collaboratively and constructively to ensure that there is no loss of independent challenge, community knowledge, or trusted insight as responsibilities transfer.

"We are determined that our legacy will be one of partnership and continuity, supporting a smooth transition while maintaining a focus on outcomes for people and communities. Our staff, volunteers and board will continue to work with professionalism and dedication to help partners design and deliver the next phase of local health and care engagement arrangements.

"We encourage all stakeholders to work together to keep local people’s voices at the centre of decision-making. The work ahead is important, not just for service improvement, but for ensuring that trust, inclusion and fairness remain central to how health and care services are shaped and delivered."
